Four upcoming vinyl releases that will be sold in independent record stores as part of Record Store Day 2018 on April 21 feature members of Led Zeppelin.

Led Zeppelin – Rock And Roll / Friends

The first release is by Led Zeppelin itself. It’s a 7″ yellow vinyl single which will include two previously unheard mixes produced by Jimmy Page: the Sunset Sound Mix of “Rock And Roll” on the A-side and the Olympic Studios Mix of “Friends” on the B-side.

The Record Store Day website said that the single will feature a large hole and an adaptor that can be removed. The release will be “housed in a printed paperboard sleeve.” LedZepNews contacted Record Store Day to ask how many copies of the single will be released, but we have yet to hear back.

“In advance of Led Zeppelin’s 50th Anniversary celebration, slated to commence this September, the band will whet fan’s appetites with their first ever release for Record Store Day on April 21. The limited edition 7-inch single is produced by Jimmy Page and pressed on yellow vinyl. The single will feature two previously unheard studio mixes, handpicked by Page to appear on the release: the ‘Sunset Sound Mix’ of ‘Rock And Roll’ b/w the ‘Olympic Studios Mix’ of ‘Friends.’

The previously unreleased version of ‘Rock And Roll’ provides an additional peek into the fabled ‘Sunset Sound Mixes’ of Led Zeppelin IV. Only two previous ‘Sunset Sound Mixes’ have been released, the first being the version of ‘When The Levee Breaks’ on the original album and the second the ‘Stairway To Heaven’ mix that debuted on the 2014 deluxe edition. The previously unheard ‘Olympic Studios Mix’ of ‘Friends’ is a stripped-down version, without the orchestration of the final mix, offering a true fly-on-the-wall feel from the band’s recording sessions for Led Zeppelin III at Headley Grange.”

The Dream Syndicate – How We Found Ourselves … Everywhere!

A second Led Zeppelin-related release is an album by The Dream Syndicate. The 12″ black vinyl release features John Paul Jones on one live track, “How Did I Find Myself Here,” according to a post from the band’s official Facebook page. The band described the release as “a maxi-EP with live tracks, studio outtakes and radio and TV sessions from around the world.” The release will be limited to 1,000 copies.

Nico – I’m Not Sayin’ / The Last Mile

This 7″ vinyl single by Nico features Jimmy Page, who plays 12-string guitar on the A-side, “I’m Not Sayin'” and also co-wrote the B-side, “The Last Mile,” and produced, arranged, and conducted the second song.

Here’s the description of the release from the Record Store Day website:

“I’m Not Sayin’ was the first original single release by Andrew Loog Oldham’s Immediate Records in August 1965. Written by Gordon Lightfoot and produced by Oldham, the song features a haunting vocal by Nico, backed by beautiful orchestration arranged and conducted by David Whittaker with The Rolling Stones’ Brian Jones on guitar with Jimmy Page. Two promotional films were shot by Peter Whitehead, one featuring Nico wandering through London’s West India Docks in 1965, an area long since changed. The song was chosen by Morrissey as a Desert Island Discs choice on BBC Radio Four. The gatefold sleeve features photography by Gered Mankowitz from the original recording session. The original b-side ‘The Last Mile’ was a co-write between Oldham and the-then Immediate Records’ musical director, Jimmy Page. Even as early as 1965, the multi-talents of the future Yardbirds and Led Zeppelin maestro were apparent: as well as guitars, Page also produced, arranged and conducted the song.”

Beverley Martyn – Where The Good Times Are

This limited edition 12″ vinyl album features both Jimmy Page and John Paul Jones. It’s being released in a special Deram cover variant that’s a Record Store Day exclusive.

The Fly Records press release for this variant explains that the takes of “Picking Up The Sunshine” and “Me And My Gin” included are the master takes, not the first takes included on last year’s Record Store Day single.

The first variant is on black vinyl with a black and white Record Store Day sticker and will be limited to 1,000 copies.

The second variant is on clear vinyl with a colour Record Store Day sticker and will be limited to 500 copies.

Jimmy Page – Playin’ Up A Storm

This isn’t an official Record Store Day 2018 release, but this collection of early Jimmy Page session tracks is being re-released on orange vinyl just before Record Store Day as a “limited edition UK record store day release.” The album is scheduled to be released on April 5, according to one online retailer.

The release is listed as being on 140 gram orange vinyl, but it was previously released on 180 gram orange vinyl, so it’s unclear exactly what’s going on there.
