John Paul Jones said it’s “pretty unlikely” that Led Zeppelin will perform again in a new radio interview.

Jones was interviewed on the Today show on BBC Radio 4 on October 29 to promote his new composition that will be premiered on November 5.

During the interview, Jones was asked whether Led Zeppelin had planned a tour to follow the band’s 2007 reunion performance at the O2 Arena in London.

“We didn’t plan … Zeppelin were never ones for planning anything particularly,” he said with a laugh. “But we thought chances are as we rehearsed quite so much, it was like you know, lets look to do some more, keep on going. But it never happened. Robert wasn’t happy to do anymore so that was it, OK.”

The interviewer, BBC arts correspondent Rebecca Jones, asked whether further performances didn’t happen because of Plant.

“Yeah, pretty much, as he will tell you,” Jones replied.

And when asked whether Jones will perform live again with Led Zeppelin, Jones said it’s not on the cards.

“Pretty unlikely. I would say no. I’m not in a great hurry to get back out on the road with that huge juggernaut again. It just got bigger and bigger and bigger.”

Jones gave the interview to promote “The Tudor Pull,” a new composition written by Jones during lockdown which will be premiered by the viol consort Fretwork at the London International Festival of Early Music.

The piece will be part of a performance that will be broadcast on the festival’s website on November 5 at 7pm.

“I thought I’d like to do something with the Thames,” Jones told the BBC in the new radio interview. “Around the same time, of course, lockdown happens and I thought ‘Ooh, I have time.’ Not only can I write this piece but I also started to catch up on my reading. I thought now is my chance to read Wolf Hall by Hilary Mantel.”

“I’m fortunate not to have to battle for professional survival,” he added. “I cannot imagine what it’s like for, what, 90 percent of the world’s musicians and not to mention all the event people, everybody involved with putting any event of any size on.”

You can hear the full interview on the BBC Sounds website here. It starts at 2:25:00.

It’s taken me 40 odd years to realise that a bass player needs to be, not necessarily the most but very versatile and keep the theory fresh in the head (Never speak it out loud)as relationships with different instruments has to be there all of the time, you may never get the credit and zero adulation but when it comes to blame, all eyes are on you.
In my opinion and I AM allowed one!
It’s quite incredible that JPJ didn’t go gaga, the LedZep machine was something the world had never experienced before, when I say world I mean the U.S. in particular. As much as I would love to see it I don’t blame him one bit for not wanting to get back to it.
Play the shows then get back to the family.
I’m sorry this is so vague I’m not getting into the blame game as ‘ I don’t know what went on as I wasn’t there ‘, but Mr Baldwin has my upmost respect and for me the most professional and talented musician I know I can no longer even dream of becoming, it doesn’t come by magic, it’s where dedication and hard work can take you.
So a big round of applause for the bass players.

  4. They are to old to play again

This is NOT news. They disbanded in 1980 after Bonham’s death. The remaining three have only ever appeared for Live Aid and Atlantic Records-related occasions. The quality of their output nosedived post Physical Graffiti and their last decent performance was in June 1977.
