Robert Plant suggested that a Led Zeppelin reunion would be a ‘disservice’

Robert Plant said in a new interview with WFPK that recording new music with Led Zeppelin and reuniting the band would be a “disservice.”

Plant was asked by host Kyle Meredith whether he would record with Jimmy Page again to celebrate the fiftieth anniversary of Led Zeppelin.

“I believe there’s a great sound in Mammoth Caves, just down the road from you,” Plant replied, referencing a national park near the Louisville radio station. “It’s the deepest underground access for the human spirit in the United States. I spent a lot of time down there. I don’t know whether we could get a good acoustic sound down there.”

“No, I don’t know,” Plant continued. “I have no idea. I don’t, I don’t, it’s not even within my countenance to imagine it really.”

Meredith noted that many people hold Led Zeppelin close to their heart. “Yeah, me too,” Plant said. “Nobody more than me. But I don’t want to do it a disservice, either.”

Elsewhere in the interview, Plant said he wanted to avoid being a “one-trick pony.”

“The guys I play with are superlative,” Plant said of his current band, The Sensational Space Shifters. “They’re the greatest guys on the planet and they’re very, very good fun. Very silly. It’s kind of like a school trip when we go on tour. It couldn’t be moe charming and humorous.”

“So to be able to write with these guys and to come out with the songs, we feel very accomplished. I don’t see it breaking doors down, but it’s … at this particular time in my existence, but for me it is breaking doors down because it’s telling me that I can actually be moved through time and still not repeat myself and not end up like some kind of a one-trick pony, you know?”

And Plant also seemed to suggest that Greta Van Fleet singer Josh Kiszka could take his place in Led Zeppelin. “He’s pretty good. He should … there’s a job somewhere for him,” Plant said.

Jimmy Page, John Paul Jones, and Jason Bonham sought to start a new band in 2008 following the 2007 O2 reunion show and Plant’s subsequent refusal to play more shows. One singer they auditioned at the time was Myles Kennedy, who described playing two unreleased songs in his audition in a May interview.

  2. Love Josh Kiszka! so much like a young Robert, shocked Robert even knows of him, would love to hear him sing with Jimmy Page and john paul jones, what a treat despite their age difference. The guitars and the voice wow. The singer Josh is a breath of fresh air not like todays music.

  3. Robert I adore you and love you as much as the air I breathe. You were a huge part of my childhood happiness and to this day, you still make me happy. You and Zepp mean so much to me. The world really. You made my life better. All of my love to you my darling Robert.

  6. Mr Plant, you owe no one anything, and those of us who have seen you through the decades, (my first time was 71 in Chicago, last time was Hardly Strictly Bluegrass a few years ago) will stand behind whatever your decision is. That said my only question to you would be that Jimmy your long time mate and part of what made you who you are is not getting any younger either. We all know he could find another singer and go out on the road as Zeppelin, but that IMHO would be a disservice, and I feel Jimmy knows that also. Jimmy’s guitar playing is also Zeppelin, but without you at the front it would seem somewhat hollow. You do what you need to do, but rest assured one more go around with Zeppelin would by no means be a disservice to anyone. Every year is getting shorter and time is on no one side!

  7. Your history as the greatest rock band is undeniable. The only band with 4 front men who cranked out the best music ever. Without Bonzo there is no Led Zeppelin and touring would be a shame because of Bonzo’s passing. Millions of people want a reunion and music these last 31/2 decades pale in comparison to the 70’s. It would be a disservice and people want to relive the past is beyond me. Enjoy your retirement Robert and I pput in a CD and listen to LZ till I pass

  8. Many think it is more difficult for Plant to do a Zep reunion than the other band member’s being the lead singer. As his voice would waiver more than Page playing his guitar. Some think it’s because Plant can’t go on stage with his shirt not buttoned up and his beer belly exposed. But, most of the fans are bald headed, have beer belly’s, or old fat women. But they still want to hear Zep.

  9. Robert has told a couple of very close friends that when he thinks of doing a Zep reunion he always remembers a favorite picture of himself. It’s at a concert in San Francisco, when a just released white piegon lands on his hand while holding a cheap English drink. The picture clearly shows Plant’s ” six-pack”, and he is very embarrassed about the ” bear belly” he has since grown. He has a vision of himself with his shirt not buttoned up, and there is no way he could do that any longer and it really bothers him. He told his close friends that he sits and looks at his old pictures and gets depressed. He said he gets very jealous of Page because it’s difficult for Robert to hit high notes with his shirt buttoned up. He is just not use to it.

  10. Ever onward Robert. Zeppelin is firmly in the past and should stay that way.
