A 1959 Gibson Les Paul guitar owned by Jeff Beck that was also played by Jimmy Page sold at auction for £403,200 on January 22.
Beck brought the guitar with him on tour to the US with The Yardbirds in 1966, with Page then playing bass guitar for the group. However, Beck’s early departure from the tour due to illness meant that Page borrowed his guitar to temporarily become the group’s lead guitarist, playing the Les Paul from August 25 to September 10, 1966.
Beck’s guitar collection was sold through Christie’s auction house in London on January 22. The 1959 Les Paul guitar had an estimate of between £40,000 and £60,000, the auction house’s website shows.
Beck purchased the guitar, later dubbed the “YardBurst”, when he replaced Eric Clapton as the lead guitarist in The Yardbirds in March 1965. In early 1968, the guitar’s original cherry sunburst finish was stripped away to expose the natural wood finish.
Page and Beck remained close throughout their careers. Following Beck’s death on January 10, 2023, Page paid tribute to him, writing on social media the following day: “The six stringed Warrior is no longer here for us to admire the spell he could weave around our mortal emotions. Jeff could channel music from the ethereal … His technique unique. His imaginations apparently limitless. Jeff I will miss you along with your millions of fans. Jeff Beck Rest in Peace.”
Page gave a eulogy at Beck’s funeral on February 3, 2023 and helped to carry Beck’s coffin.
