“Mr. Jimmy”, the feature-length documentary film about Jimmy Page tribute artist Akio Sakurai, will be released on Blu-ray and DVD in Japan on July 2.
The film, released in September 2023, follows Sakurai as he leaves his native Japan and attempts to make a career in the US by closely copying everything from Page’s stage presence to his clothes and instruments.
The film will be released in a standard edition containing the film and as an expanded deluxe version that includes special features such as deleted scenes as well as extended interviews with Sakurai and Frankie Banali.
Other bonus content on the expanded version of the film’s release will include footage from screening Q&A panels, including an October 18, 2023 panel conversation held at Olympic Studios in London between Dowd, Tight But Loose editor Dave Lewis and guitar pedal pioneer Roger Mayer.
The standard and deluxe versions of the film are available to pre-order through Tower Records in Japan. No physical release of the film outside of Japan has been announced.
LedZepNews spoke to Sakurai and the film’s director Peter Michael Dowd in October 2023. “My Jimmy Page quest never ends,” Sakurai told us. “The more I chase him, the more I realise I am not like him at all. He’s too cool,” he added. “I really want to become like him, but I never could be.”
