Led Zeppelin’s Live EP was mastered by John Davis’ son Felix Davis

Live EP

Led Zeppelin’s upcoming Live E.P. was mastered by Felix Davis, the son of mastering engineer John Davis who worked with Jimmy Page on Led Zeppelin’s most recent remasters.

A LedZepNews reader got in touch to point out that the website of Metropolis shows that the younger Davis mastered Live E.P. The release is included in his discography on the company website and a track from it is included in playlist containing music he worked on. A spokesperson for Metropolis confirmed to LedZepNews that Davis mastered Live E.P.

Felix’s father John Davis worked on Led Zeppelin’s recent remasters and became Page’s go-to mastering engineer before his death in 2023.

The discovery that Felix Davis mastered Live E.P. ends weeks of speculation over the mastering of the release following Kevin Shirley’s public comments in which he claimed Live E.P. uses mixes he created in 2002.

In its original announcement of Live E.P. in July, Led Zeppelin did not indicate who mixed or mastered the EP’s contents, beyond noting that “these live performances were originally released on the 2003 Led Zeppelin DVD”.

Upon listening to the two singles released from Live E.P., Shirley wrote on social media: “I do believe they are all my mixes, which I did of the Earls Court shows from 1975 and the Knebworth concert from 1979. I mixed these in 2002.”

Last month, Shirley claimed “Kashmir” from Live E.P. also uses his 2002 mix but noted that “it sounds a little brighter on this release”, indicating that it had been mastered following his original mixes.

During the 2000s, Shirley was Jimmy Page’s go-to producer for Led Zeppelin releases. He worked on the 2003 live album How The West Was Won as well as the 2003 Led Zeppelin DVD and the 2007 remaster of The Song Remains The Same.

This 2003 interview with Shirley is a fascinating look at his work with Led Zeppelin, but his collaboration with the band seemed to end around 2007. “I attended the O2 concert which was the last time I saw Jimmy Page in person, and that was on the stage. I haven’t spoken to him since,” Shirley told LedZepNews in 2018 after rumours surfaced that he was working on Led Zeppelin material.

The recent remaster and expanded release of Page’s 2000 live album with The Black Crowes, Live at the Greek, was overseen by Shirley, however.
