A gong owned and used on stage by John Bonham sold at auction in New York on October 24 for $101,600.

The Paiste gong was used by Bonham for Led Zeppelin shows such as the band’s January 9, 1970 performance at the Royal Albert Hall in London.

Sotheby’s auction house sold the gong as part of its October Rock & Pop auction. The hammer price was just within the auction house’s $100,000 to $200,000 estimate.

The gong was previously sold through Bonham’s auction house in the UK for £52,750 in 2021. “This gong was purchased from a Chelsea auction house in 1982,” Bonham’s explained. It also noted that “there are also signs of use as it is blackened,” indicating it may have been set alight during a performance.

A different Paiste gong used on stage by Bonham sold for $64,660 through Bonham’s in 2009. That gong was sold by Bonham’s family.

Also on October 24, Sotheby’s sold a Fender Stratocaster electric guitar played by Jimmy Page in 1991 while he was recording the album Coverdale/Page. The guitar sold for $63,500, within the auction house’s $50,000 to $75,000 estimate.
