LEAKED: Led Zeppelin will release a remastered edition of How The West Was Won on March 23

Leaked Amazon listings showed that Led Zeppelin is preparing to release a remastered edition of the live album How The West Was Won, which was originally released in 2003.

How The West Was Won is a combination of soundboard recordings of Led Zeppelin’s Los Angeles performances from June 25 and June 27, 1972.

The leaked Amazon listings were first published on the IMWAN forum and show that the remastered version of the live album will not include any additional tracks. The listings currently have a release date of March 23 on Amazon and Bull Moose, and Led Zeppelin’s official announcement confirmed that release date.

The album will be released in several different formats. Click the links below to see the Amazon listings:

4 vinyl: $124.98

3 CD: $24.98

Blu-ray audio: $24.98

4 vinyl/3 CD/ 1 DVD deluxe box set: $179.98

The deluxe box set includes an art print, and the first 30,000 editions will be numbered. It also includes a card with a code for a high definition audio download of the album, just like previous Led Zeppelin re-releases.

Here’s the official description of the releases, which we saw via a listing on Bull Moose:

“On September 7, 1968, John Bonham, John Paul Jones, Jimmy Page, and Robert Plant first took the stage together in Gladsaxe, Denmark. Then billed as ‘The New Yardbirds,’ the band would assemble in the studio for the first time later that month to start recording their debut album as Led Zeppelin, and rock ‘n’ roll would never be the same again. Before the band’s 50th Anniversary celebration officially begins in September, Led Zeppelin will continue their reissue campaign with a new edition of their celebrated live album How The West Was Won, originally released in 2003, featuring newly remastered audio, which was done under the supervision of Jimmy Page. Details of additional Led Zeppelin 50th Anniversary releases and events will be announced later this year.

HOW THE WEST WAS WON will be released on March 23 in multiple formats from Atlantic/Swan Song, including the first ever vinyl and Blu-ray Audio editions (with the Blu-ray containing hi-res 5.1 surround sound).

* CD – Remastered audio on three CDs
* Vinyl – Remastered audio on four 180-gram vinyl LPs.
* Blu-Ray Audio – 96kHz/24 bit 5.1 (DTS-HD Master Audio Surround) and stereo mixes
(PCM Stereo and DTS-HD Master Audio Stereo).
* Streaming & Digital Download – Remastered audio.
* Super Deluxe Boxed Set
– Remastered audio on three CDs and four 180-gram vinyl LPs.
– DVD of album in Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround and PCM Stereo, plus photo gallery.
– High-def download card of all stereo audio content at 96kHz/24 bit.
– A book filled with rare and previously unpublished photos of the band at each of the concert locations, plus memorabilia and ephemera.
– High-quality print of the original album cover, the first 30,000 of which will be individually numbered.

HOW THE WEST WAS WON highlights the best performances from Led Zeppelin’s legendary concerts at the Los Angeles Forum and Long Beach Arena on June 25 and 27, 1972. Melded together and sequenced to replicate a single concert from beginning to end, the three-CD and four-LP collections capture the band at the height of its formidable powers. Standouts include a 25-plus minute version of ‘Dazed And Confused’ and a 21-minute medley based around ‘Whole Lotta Love.’ The performances also capture the band introducing songs from its then-unreleased album Houses Of The Holy, which would be released nine months later.”

The prices are not yet confirmed and may change before the album is released.

The re-release will have the same tracklist as the original 2003 release:

  1. LA Drone
  2. Immigrant Song
  3. Heartbreaker
  4. Black Dog
  5. Over The Hills And Far Away
  6. Since I’ve Been Loving You
  7. Stairway To Heaven
  8. Going To California

  10. Bron-Yr-Aur Stomp
  11. Dazed And Confused
  12. What Is And What Should Never Be

  14. Moby Dick

  17. The Ocean
  18. Bring It On Home

LedZepNews speculated that a remastered release of How The West Was Won was on the way in a January 11 article which drew attention to the album’s cover in a promotional calendar released by the band’s record label Rhino Records.

This has happened before

This isn’t the first time that leaked Amazon listings have revealed upcoming Led Zeppelin re-releases, either. All of the band’s recent studio album re-releases were first revealed through secret Amazon listings before details of the releases were officially announced.

The leaked listings happen when record labels privately list upcoming releases in preparation for an official announcement. Industry insiders and journalists often know the links ahead of time and share the details of them online.

Led Zeppelin’s mastering engineer hinted at an upcoming release

John Davis, the mastering engineer who Jimmy Page has worked with on all of the recent Led Zeppelin remasters, quickly deleted a Facebook post in October.

(Facebook/John Davis)

The post claimed that Davis had been working on mastering an upcoming release from Led Zeppelin. It’s possible that he was referring to this remaster of How The West Was Won.

This doesn’t seem to be the ‘unheard’ music Jimmy Page referred to

But what’s not clear is if this remaster is what Jimmy Page meant when said that there were upcoming releases from Led Zeppelin to celebrate the band’s fiftieth anniversary in 2018.

“There’ll be Led Zeppelin product coming out, for sure, that people haven’t heard,” Page said in an interview with the Academy of Achievement, “because I’m working on that. Next year will be the fiftieth year so there’s all manner of surprises coming out.”

It seems unlikely that the How The West Was Won remaster is something Page classes as something “people haven’t heard” as no bonus tracks appear to be included on this release.

  1. A little pricey for the vinyl don’t you think? Like They don’t have enough money already. Thanks.

  2. Got Too get my copy! Gotta make time for the day long beige.

  3. Nice to see a separate Blu-ray release of the 5.1 mix for only US$25 – but why does the super deluxe only come with a lossy DVD-Video? You couldn’t pony up an extra $2/set to make it a 3CD/4LP/DVD/BD set? Or made the DVD a DVD-Audio with 5.1 24/96 MLP (like the previous OOP DVD-A release?) rather than lossy 448 Kbps Dolby 5.1? But kudos where kudos are due, fans of 5.1 are sick of “Immersion” sets requiring you to fork out $100+ for 5.1 mixes when we only want the single disc with the 5.1 mix – Soundgarden’s Badmotorfinger was over $150 for the 6-disc set, the only way to get the 5.1 mix. Lame.

I never got a stamped Jimmy Page by Jimmy Page even though I ordered it on the day they announced it was coming out. All I wanted as the #1 fan of Page a walking encyclopedia of knowledge now again they dangle a carrot but I’m sure they have sold out. Makes me want to cry again I’m glad there are new Zeppelinists but what about those of who over 60? We don’t stand a chance with 20 year olds. LRH initials only said I was getting a letter from her Godfather I wonder if she lied but I still pray for her and hope she gets surgery soon. Is she real? I even bought picture frames for the letter. I adore Page and pray for him every morning. God bless James

  5. Why is the vinyl so expensive? I got my “Mothership” box set for only US $50, and that also had four records.

  6. Led Zeppelin did over 500 shows. Why is there such limited material available? What the heck were they thinking?

  7. I know Joe Nocella! What the F were they (well, Peter Grant) thinking!??!!!

SO MANY SHOWS and this is all they’ve got?! There would be a SiriusXM Led Zepellin channel right now if the material had been recorded, etc. I feel cheated… 🙁

  8. We aren’t all millionaires geez I’ve spent more on Zeppelin and Page than I bought clothes for myself. Now 62 I can’t afford to buy albums in another format, I’ll buy the Blu Ray but hope for a Page solo album. How about listening to the fans I’ve followed and love that guitar song since the Yardbirds years.

  9. Haven’t you heard of ringing every last penny out of your fans for stuff you did 50 years ago?

  10. Will those of us that bought the original CD version back in 2003 get a rebate? And why couldn’t Page master it correctly in the first place?
