The Live At The Greek reissue will be a ‘six vinyl box set’

The upcoming reissue of Live At The Greek, the live album Jimmy Page released in 2000 with The Black Crowes, will be a “six vinyl box set” according to Black Crowes singer Chris Robinson.

Speaking to Eddie Trunk on his SiriusXM radio show earlier this month, Robinson confirmed plans to release an expanded version of the album “some time next spring”.

The re-release will be a “six vinyl box set, incredible remixed, remastered and all sorts of stuff from a few other pieces but there’s stuff from the soundcheck, there’s a jam that no-one had heard in 25 years of Rich and Jimmy and everyone just jamming on stage, playing super… special stuff,” Robinson said.

The box set will restore Black Crowes songs and blues covers that Page and the band performed in 1999 but were never released on the original live album.

“For whatever genius reason that the record company had back then, it was obviously some bad blood between us and them that they didn’t want to put the Black Crowes material on it,” Robinson said.

“We did play a lot of blues numbers, we did some Muddy Waters, we did some Little Walter, we did some Champion Jack Dupree,” he added. “That’s how we meet Jimmy and bond with him was over blues stuff. Some of those tracks are on there. This record will have the Black Crowes stuff and lots of other things that have never been released.”

Robinson’s comments on the upcoming release come after his band’s management issued a public plea on October 3 for the master tapes of pro-shot footage of the band performing with Page in 2000 as they seek video content for the box set.

“We’d love to know who has the pro-shot show at the Jones Beach Theater, Wantagh, NY, on 7-10-2000. We’re hoping to find the master tapes for licensing consideration. Please reach out if you have a lead on who has them or if you shot other footage of this show,” the email sent to subscribers to the band’s official mailing list read.

The original Live At The Greek album featured songs recorded during a pair of shows that took place on October 18 and October 19, 1999 at the Greek Theatre in Los Angeles.

During the October 18, 1999 show, the band performed the Black Crowes songs “No Speak No Slave”, “Hard To Handle” and “Remedy”. And on the second night, they performed “No Speak No Slave”, “Wiser Time” and “Remedy”. None of those songs have been officially released.

Extra tracks not included on the original release have emerged over time. The Japanese version of the album included the Led Zeppelin songs “Misty Mountain Hop” and “In The Light” that were recorded at Jones Beach on July 10, 2000.

Those songs, along with “Bring It On Home” from that show, were released on a three-track 10″ vinyl EP titled Live at Jones Beach on April 22, 2017 for Record Store Day that was limited to 3,000 copies. Once copies of this release arrived it was found that the EP was actually limited to 4,000 copies, not 3,000.

During the Jones Beach show, the band also played the Led Zeppelin song “Hots On For Nowhere” as well as a cover of “I Can’t Be Satisfied” by Muddy Waters and the Black Crowes songs “No Speak No Slave”, “Horsehead”, “Remedy” and “She Talks To Angels.” None of those songs have been officially released.

For Record Store Day on April 19, 2014, the Live At The Greek album was released on red, clear and blue vinyl and limited to 2,000 copies.

Elsewhere in the interview with Trunk, which took place in early October, Robinson said that he had in the past week seen a private screening of the documentary film “Becoming Led Zeppelin”.

The film has been rated for release in the US and is listed by its US distributor online as “coming soon” but no release date has been announced.
