An immersive tribute to John Bonham will be launched in his home town of Redditch on March 14, Redditch Borough Council has announced.
Scanning a QR code that will be installed at the statue of Bonham in the town will launch an immersive animation of Bonham that was created using motion capture technology.
Local drummer Matt Green was filmed playing the drums to “Rock and Roll”, “Good Times, Bad Times” and “Immigrant Song”, with the footage combined with a new animation of Bonham.
A video posted by Redditch’s Palace Drum Clinic in February provides a behind the scenes look at the motion capture technology.
The immersive tribute to Bonham will only be accessible to people who physically visit the statue that was installed in Redditch in 2018 to mark what would have been Bonham’s seventieth birthday.
LedZepNews understands the immersive tribute will also include a local guide that directs people to relevant locations in Redditch that bring to life Bonham’s early history.
The new tribute was created through a partnership between Rediscover North East Worcestershire (ReNEW), Birmingham Music Archive and Birmingham Open Media. It appears that a web page for the tribute will be launched here on March 14.
Along with the new animation of Bonham, Redditch Library will this month “be creating a special collection of John Bonham materials from the Library’s Archive and Collections for visitors to view and learn more about John’s life,” according to the Palace Drum Clinic website. The library did not respond to an email from LedZepNews asking for more information about the collection.
In February, the Redditch Local History Museum installed a display about the history of Bonham which can be seen in a photograph published by the Redditch Advertiser.
Councillor Juliet Barker Smith, the portfolio holder for Leisure and Culture, said: “John Bonham is revered by some of the greatest drummers across history. Phil Collins, Stewart Copeland, Taylor Hawkins amongst many others, have all cited him as a primary influence and even Dave Grohl has said “No one gets close to him”. So, his connection to Redditch is a matter of great pride. To see his statue ‘come alive’ via this new immersive and cutting-edge project is a really exciting prospect. Residents will be able to get involved and immerse themselves in the history of Bonham in Redditch, showcasing our town to music lovers everywhere. I can’t wait!”
Councillor Joe Baker, the leader of Redditch Borough Council, said: “This is a fresh project for the town. Building on the previous successes of the ReNEW project to bring you their latest collaborative cutting edge experience. The Rhythm of Redditch is a great chance to showcase the town to people from far and wide and everything it has to offer.”
