A 1922 Gibson L1 acoustic guitar played by Jimmy Page and Robert Plant is currently up for sale at auction house Gotta Have Rock and Roll.

The guitar was previously owned by famous groupie Pamela Des Barres. Along with Page and Plant, the guitar was also played by Keith Moon, Gram Parsons, Chris Hillman, Lowell George, Frank Zappa, Waylon Jennings, Don Johnson, Steve Jones, Doug Feiger, Ryan Adams and Rhett Miller, according to the guitar’s auction description.

The guitar has an estimate of between $20,000 to $30,000 in the auction house’s current Rock & Roll Pop Culture Auction which ends on August 10. Its minimum opening bid is $5,000.

Des Barres’ guitar was first offered for sale through Heritage Auctions in October 2006 but failed to sell.

The 2006 auction included a typewritten letter from Des Barres explaining the guitar’s history. “I sat between Jimmy Page and Robert Plant at my Hollywood apartment on Alfred Street while they passed it back and forth, playing the blues deep into the night. Jimmy wanted it for himself and offered me $2500, which was a fortune at the time, but I still thought I might miraculously turn into a country songbird some fine day,” she wrote in the letter.

“I did write a couple of GTO’s songs on it, and a weepy ballad for Mr. Page called ‘Come In from the Storm, Come Inside’,” the letter continued.

The guitar surfaced again through Heritage Auctions when it sold for $5,875 on August 11, 2023. That sale included a slightly different typed letter from Des Barres, which was edited to add the line “Woe was me, and my Led Zep broken heart. Sigh.”

The sales listing from Gotta Have Rock and Roll shows the tags from the 2023 auction including the lot number #85140, suggesting the buyer from 2023 is now seeking to sell the instrument in 2025.
