“Becoming Led Zeppelin” was not shortlisted for best documentary feature film or best sound in the upcoming Oscars, meaning the film is not eligible to be nominated in either awards category.
LedZepNews reported earlier this month that Sony Pictures Classics had publicly promoted the film in both awards categories. It has also been promoting the film in the best film editing category, which the film could still be nominated for as nominations for that award will be announced next year.
On December 16, the Academy Awards announced the shortlists for 12 awards categories which had preliminary voting earlier this month.
The documentary feature film category shortlist largely consisted of niche documentaries that didn’t rack up significant box office interest, as “Becoming Led Zeppelin” did. The film has grossed more than $15 million from its worldwide cinema release, LedZepNews understands.
Billboard noted that no music documentaries made the shortlist for best documentary feature film, with films such as “Billy Idol Should Be Dead”, “It’s Never Over, Jeff Buckley” and “One to One: John and Yoko” also failing to reach the shortlist.
Rhino Records, the catalogue division of Led Zeppelin’s record label Warner Music Group, had also shared Sony Pictures Classics’ Oscars promotion. The decision by Rhino Records to publish the posts suggests that Led Zeppelin may be more keen to promote “Becoming Led Zeppelin” following months of relative silence about the film and its release.
The film’s Oscars snub comes after the film missed out on a Grammy nomination for best music film. It was, however, a joint winner of best music documentary at the Critics Choice Documentary Awards last month.
Earlier on December 16, Screen Daily reported that “Becoming Led Zeppelin” is a contender for the outstanding British film category at the BAFTA film awards. 18 documentaries were part of the 69 films submitted for the award, it reported. The next BAFTA film awards will be announced on February 22.

The Oscars are a bunch of crap. They’ll probably put some wicked category for the musical shit.
The reason?..it was snubbed by the Oscars the first time because it was released too late for eligibility for this year’s Oscars nomination now it’s once again being snubbed for next year’s Oscars it’s not fair that a biopic about bob Dylan that was released around Christmas be eligible for the Oscars and then win? don’t you think that Becoming Led Zeppelin deserves to be nominated even for a shortlist?..and then returned to some movie theaters, that never shown it, but only for consideration?
