“There were three of us, friends, all 15 years old and in the same class at school,” Segelke recalls. “We were naturally excited—our very first concert, and Led Zeppelin at that, in the sold-out Bremen Stadthalle.”

“There was stress with our parents, first about the money (20 DM was the equivalent of my monthly allowance back then), then about the timing,” he adds. “The concert was on a Monday, school was the next day, and since we lived outside the city, it would take us another hour to get home after the show. Okay, so we begged, promised everything we could, and off we went.”

“At the time, we only knew Led Zeppelin from their official albums and ‘The Song Remains the Same’ movie. We fought our way pretty far forward in the arena,” Segelke continued in an email to LedZepNews. “The lights went out, the band came on stage, and we were initially taken aback by Robert and Jimmy’s appearance. As I said, we were only 15, looks were still important to us, and we identified more with the 70s. Robert’s short hair and especially Jimmy with his baggy green trousers just didn’t fit our image at all.”

“The band was typical of the 80s, and their setlist was short, concise, limited to 100 minutes, no 30 minutes of ‘Dazed and Confused,’ no long drum solo, just three songs from the new album. And the sound in the Bremen Stadthalle was terrible,” he recalls. “Yes, we were a bit disappointed; this wasn’t the Led Zeppelin we ‘knew’ and had obviously expected.”

“Nevertheless, we had a great time—it was Led Zeppelin after all, and we were there! And how we were! We were standing just a few meters from the stage, right in the middle of a completely ecstatic crowd. This made taking photos with my smuggled pocket camera (bringing cameras was forbidden back then) very difficult. I could only hold it up above my head and wait for a brief moment when I could hold it steady for a second,” he adds.

  1. Thanks for sharing this moment in the History of Led Zeppelin.

I wasn’t Knebworth on August 11th 1979, and the fashion trend was already apparent.

    Rock On.
