Kevin Shirley claims Led Zeppelin’s new Live EP uses his mixes from 2002

Live EP

Producer Kevin Shirley has claimed that Led Zeppelin’s upcoming Live EP uses mixes he produced in 2002 rather than new mixes of the live recordings.

Writing on social media on August 11, Shirley said: “So I’m excited because there’s a live Led Zeppelin EP coming out in September… and I do believe they are all my mixes, which I did of the Earls Court shows from 1975 and the Knebworth concert from 1979. I mixed these in 2002.”

“It’s not easy to get credit on all of these things, but having listened to them I’m sure they are my mixes,” he continued. “And it makes me super proud because I absolutely love Led Zeppelin! There’s also a picture of Jimmy and myself during the mixing sessions and an old tape box from The Song Remains The Same concert series, recorded at Madison Square Garden and engineered by Eddie Kramer. I mixed those for the DVD release of the movie.”

Led Zeppelin’s new Live EP contains four songs, all of which were previously released on the band’s 2003 DVD release which used Shirley’s mixes from 2002.

Here’s the tracklist of the new EP:

  • In My Time Of Dying (Earl’s Court – 1975) (11:25)
  • Trampled Under Foot (Earl’s Court – 1975) (9:06)
  • Sick Again (Knebworth – 1979) (5:18)
  • Kashmir (Knebworth – 1979) (9:02)

During the 2000s, Shirley was Jimmy Page’s go-to producer for Led Zeppelin releases. He worked on the 2003 live album How The West Was Won as well as the 2003 Led Zeppelin DVD and the 2007 remaster of The Song Remains The Same.

This 2003 interview with Shirley is a fascinating look at his work with Led Zeppelin, but his collaboration with the band seemed to end around 2007. “I attended the O2 concert which was the last time I saw Jimmy Page in person, and that was on the stage. I haven’t spoken to him since,” Shirley told LedZepNews in 2018 after rumours surfaced that he was working on Led Zeppelin material.

The recent remaster and expanded release of Page’s 2000 live album with The Black Crowes, Live at the Greek, was overseen by Shirley, however.

    Led Zeppelin my favorite band

  3. So I’m not fully understanding this story. Is Shirley saying the new release doesn’t acknowledge his contributions to the mixes? Is he asking for credit or is he just “pretty sure” these are his mixes?

  4. when a song recorded live is mixed in the studio it becomes a studio song just look at all those classic live albums thin lizzy live and dangerous wings over america judas priest unleashed in the east even zep own song remains the same i could go on all these had the odd bum guitar note and vocal touched up in the studio before being sold to the public

  5. Speaking of Song Remains the Same…
“The Song Remains the Same”, were reshot on a soundstage at Shepperton Studios in 1974. This was done after the original filming at Madison Square Garden in 1973. The reshoots were done because the original footage was deemed unsatisfactory.
The cameramen were higher than sheet and missed key shots and were not in sync.
Great read when you find it 😉

  7. I heard Trampled Undergoot & to me it sounds even better than the 2002 mixes. A little better balance & more energy… or it could be just my new computer speakers. Either way it sounded really good- how about releasing the complete albums??!
