The first new music written by John Paul Jones to be performed in five years can now be heard after LedZepNews discovered a video of “The Call”, an original composition by Jones that was performed in Helsinki, Finland last month.

“The Call” was written by Jones for cello and organ. It was performed by Anssi Karttunen and Olivier Latry at a November 10 concert in memory of the composer Kaija Saariaho.

Karttunen appears to have published a video of “The Call” on YouTube on December 11:

The work is the first original composition by Jones to be performed since “The Tudor Pull”, another instrumental piece written by Jones, was performed in November 2020.

Along with the video of the performance of “The Call”, LedZepNews has also seen a copy of the programme for the tribute concert which was shared with us by Wilhelm Kvist, the music editor of Finnish newspaper Hufvudstadsbladet who attended the show and published a review of it.

“John Paul Jones (1946-) and Kaija became friends in Stockholm in 2013 when he interviewed her at the Polar Prize ceremonies. Their friendship was built on their mutual curiosity in each other’s musicianship. ‘The Call’ feels like a celebration, that of a friendship that might so easily not have happened. In her youth, Kaija played with the idea of becoming a church organist, while John Paul actually was one at the start of his career,” the programme reads.

Since 2020, Jones has largely focused on performing improvisational works as part of the groups Sons of Chipotle and Tres Coyotes. He has also performed improvisational music with Thurston Moore.

A brief sample of Jones’ opera “The Ghost Sonata” emerged in January when a Discogs seller attempted to sell a sampler CD featuring Jones’ soundtrack for $50,000. The video containing the track and the Discogs sale listing were later removed.

Another piece of new music written by Jones, a song cycle based on four poems, will be performed in London on January 8.
