A handwritten letter sent by Jimmy Page to his pen pal in 1962 sold at auction for $13,000 on March 13.
The letter, postmarked July 6, 1962, was sent by Page to Ronnie Kellerman, head of the Jerry Lewis Fan Club.
“Liverpool groups seem to have swamped the scene over here, but The Beatles are the only ones any good,” 18-year-old Page wrote in the letter.
Christie’s auction house sold the letter at auction in New York. It had given the item an estimate of between $10,000 and $15,000.
The letter was sold to an online bidder at auction, according to a video of the sale. The total sale price including buyer’s premiums was $16,510, according to the Christie’s website.
The letter last surfaced also at Christie’s on June 23, 2009 where it sold for $12,500.
Since then, the letter had been in the collection of Jim Irsay who amassed a significant amount of valuable musical memorabilia that is now being auctioned following Irsay’s death on May 21.
A second letter sent by Page to Kellerman likely earlier in 1962 also surfaced at the auction house GottaHaveRockAndRoll in 2024 with an estimate of between $30,000 and $50,000. It failed to attract any bids in August 2024 and presumably failed to sell in December 2024 following a single bid for $10,000.
An electric guitar signed by Page in 2002 that was also owned by Irsay sold at the same Christie’s auction on March 13 for $7,000. The auction house had given it an estimate of between $4,000 and $6,000.
