A motorbike that Robert Plant was photographed on at Jennings Farm in the early 1970s sold at auction for £21,000 on August 29.
The 1917 Phelon and Moore 500cc motorbike was sold by Laidlaw Auctioneers and Valuers in Carlisle.
Plant never owned the motorbike, and it’s unclear whether he ever drove it, but the vintage Royal Flying Corps motorbike included documents such as its logbook which confirm that the motorbike is the same vehicle Plant was photographed with.
The motorbike was given an estimate of between £15,000 and £25,000.
Auctioneer Paul Laidlaw confirmed the motorbike’s auction result to LedZepNews. “Ultimately, it was slugged out between a sophisticated vintage bike enthusiast in the room who had travelled from the south and a Led Zeppelin fan (who knows nothing of vintage motorcycles) bidding via the telephone,” he said. “It will remain one of my favourite lots of my career.”
Laidlaw’s confirmation of the auction comes after some confusion over whether the motorbike sold. The auction firm’s website initially listed the bike as “unsold” which led to the News & Star reporting on September 1 that it had failed to sell.
The newspaper then published another article on September 4 which correctly reported on the £21,000 sale.
