The management of The Black Crowes has issued an unusual public plea for the master tapes of pro-shot footage of the band performing with Jimmy Page in 2000 as they prepare to release an expanded box set of their live album Live At The Greek in February 2025.
The band has been working with well-known Led Zeppelin collector Mark McFall, who runs the Zepfan website and podcast. Via McFall, they issued a plea for any pro-shot or other footage of the band performing with Page at the Jones Beach Theater in Wantagh, New York on July 10, 2000.
“In anticipation of the 25th Anniversary of The Black Crowes and Jimmy Page’s live performance, the Black Crowes management is looking for footage, and we need your help,” McFall wrote on the Royal Orleans forum on October 3. The same message was sent on October 3 to subscribers to the band’s official email updates.
“We’d love to know who has the pro-shot show at the Jones Beach Theater, Wantagh, NY, on 7-10-2000. We’re hoping to find the master tapes for licensing consideration. Please reach out if you have a lead on who has them or if you shot other footage of this show; we’d love to hear from you! Thanks,” he continued.
Anyone with information on the footage is encouraged to contact the band’s management on christian.tachiera@redlightmanagement.com
McFall’s post seemingly confirms reports that Black Crowes band member Chris Robinson told Eddie Trunk in an interview that the band and Page plan to expand the album to six discs to include previously unreleased live performances of Black Crowes songs, soundchecks and jams.
The plea for footage suggests the boxed set may also include DVD or Blu-Ray discs containing live performances – if the band can track down the master tapes. The Jones Beach footage has been circulating online for years but in relatively poor quality.
“The versions found on YouTube originated from DVD. If I recall correctly, the DVD was first released in the early 2000s on the Watchtower label, then quickly reproduced by other labels, such as Boogie Mama and Bad Wizard,” McFall tells LedZepNews.
“The story goes that this pro shot and other band pro shots from the same venue were recorded by someone hooking up a camcorder to a TV feed behind the bar. This can possibly be why the band is having trouble finding it, as it may have never been fully available to the media for licensing.”
“That said, I know the Jones Beach footage was used on a CNN report with a Jimmy Page interview, and a VH1 Webcast also featured the footage, with an interview with Jimmy, Rich & Chris,” he continued.
McFall also shared details of what footage from the shows at the Greek Theater is circulating. “There is also some really amazing footage of the Greek Theater that was filmed by Ross Halfin,” he said. “It includes sound checks from both nights, and live footage from the pit. This can be found on my YouTube channel.”
“When it comes to private footage from the Greek, most fans are aware of the shows filmed by Terry Stephenson, which are really incredible,” he said. “Through this process, I was able to locate another source to these shows, not only are they not circulating, I don’t think any collectors knew another source existed.”
The boxed set is likely to be released in February, 25 years after the album was released on February 29, 2000.
Robinson revealed the box set project in an interview with Howard Stern on March 27. “We’re going to, I think, do a box set next year. It will be the 25th anniversary of that record. That record has been released a couple of times but without any of the Black Crowes songs that we did with him, so it’s very exciting,” Robinson said on the show.
The original album features songs recorded during a pair of shows that took place on October 18 and October 19, 1999 at the Greek Theatre in Los Angeles.
During the October 18, 1999 show, the band performed The Black Crowes songs “No Speak No Slave”, “Hard To Handle” and “Remedy”. And on the second night, they performed “No Speak No Slave”, “Wiser Time” and “Remedy”. None of those songs have been officially released.
Extra tracks not included on the original release have emerged over time. The Japanese version of the album included the Led Zeppelin songs “Misty Mountain Hop” and “In The Light” that were recorded at Jones Beach on July 10, 2000.
Those songs were then released on a three-track 10″ vinyl EP titled Live at Jones Beach on April 22, 2017 for Record Store Day that was limited to 3,000 copies along with “Bring It On Home”, also from the July 10, 2000 show. Once copies of this release arrived it was found that the EP was actually limited to 4,000 copies, not 3,000.
During the Jones Beach show, the band also played the Led Zeppelin song “Hots On For Nowhere” as well as a cover of “I Can’t Be Satisfied” by Muddy Waters and the Black Crowes songs “No Speak No Slave”, “Horsehead”, “Remedy” and “She Talks To Angels.” None of those songs have been officially released.
For Record Store Day on April 19, 2014, the Live At The Greek album was released on red, clear and blue vinyl and limited to 2,000 copies.
